Re: Paul Verhoeven
I’d definitely recommend Black Book if you’re open to being turned around on the guy. It’s a fairly recent Dutch-language period drama about a Jewish woman trying to get through the Nazi occupation, played without the overwhelming sarcasm of some of his films. Though Robocop is still pretty awesome.
Also, the Abrams Trek movie is the best Trek movie? That’s insane. It’s very watchable but it’s not much of a story–Kirk starts a dick and ends a dick, and he’s the main character! And shouldn’t the explosion have time-traveled and destroyed the galaxy years before Nero arrived? And then there’s a third act enervatingly free of complication, they basically just come up with a plan to beat Nero and it works flawlessly. The dumb science extends, unfortunately, to every aspect of the movie.
