Terrestrial radio…
Poli-Sci-Fi Radio is broadcast live on The Radiator, a low-power FM radio station in Burlington, Vermont. The Radiator (WOMM-LP) operates at an effective radiated power of 100 watts at 105.9 FM. The Radiator’s antenna, transmitter and offices are located at 215 College Street in downtown Burlington. Listeners in the greater Burlington, Vermont area can tune in on Sunday evenings from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.
Live web streaming…
Listeners who are outside the effective radiated power of The Radiator can listen in to a live stream of the show by clicking here. Obviously, the link is only relevant on Sunday evenings from 4-6 pm eastern time. Stream-listeners can also participate in the program via an embedded IRC chat on the live stream page.
Recording and editing…
As Poli-Sci-Fi Radio goes out over the local airwaves, we take a line-out from the broadcast board and send it into a Marantz PMD 660 digital audio recorder. Once the show is over, we import the resulting PCM audio file into Apple’s Garage Band, do some very minor editing and export the edited file as an mp3 audio file, which is then uploaded to the Poli-Sci-Fi Radio site as a downloadable podcast. The show is broadcast live on Sunday evenings and barring technical and/or personal difficulties, it should be posted online by the following Monday or Tuesday.
Listening and subscribing…
Listeners can subscribe to Poli-Sci-Fi Radio via iTunes or their favorite podcatcher. PSFR’s feeds are made with Feedburner.
The technical crew…
Poli-Sci-Fi Radio’s engineer and IRC chat moderator is Emily Stoneking. The Radiator’s chief engineer is Sean LaRock. Podcasting and RSS advice and tweaking is provided by Jim Brayton. Other indispensable IT assistance is provided by the incomparable Jeff Botas. Episodes are edited, compressed and uploaded by Bill Simmon.
